Highlands Unlimited Inc. Job Descriptions
Packer/Wrangler
- Know and utilize all livestock. Youngsters first. Rotating animals to give time off as necessary. Personal riding animals also. Without sound (body and mind) animals, we cannot operate and without that you get no paycheck.
- Livestock care is first priority. Early a.m. catching, breakfast, saddling when necessary. Your crew are creatures of habit if you catch and grain at 4:30am everyday (even if you get to go back to bed) you hedge your bets on not loosing anyone. Picketing and bed check.
- Set up, service, and tear down camps. Propane, firewood, batteries, etc. Extras to the client include anything we do not provide or require a trip to town. Set up camps - down to pads rolled out on the cots, firewood split for first fire, stove tested, lanterns & mantles checked and checking dishes for dust and grime. Tearing down camps Ðlabeling all gear and marking for any repairs. The better you notice and polish the details the better your tips.
- Pack meat. Either by radio or riding; all camps must have personal contact no less than every other day. When there is meat down, get out of camp (trailhead or Sand Creek) at or just after first light. The majority of pack outs are non-eventful and getting out early will allow you to be back in camp before dark.
Camp Cook
- Make menu. Shop for groceries. Prep and freeze as necessary.
- Prepare breakfast and pack lunches for clients and crew before sunrise.
- Do dishes, general camp clean up, split wood, haul water and prep dinner.
- Dinner needs to be ready about 30 minutes after return of hunters.
- Days go from about 4am to about 10pm. With all daylight hours to yourself mostly.
